Tarot and its symbols have existed from time immemorial. Their meanings were known to people in the Medieval Ages, most of whom were illiterate. Therefore the pictorials were enjoyed by all. To some the Tarot would have been incorporating 'the code'; thus the first Tarot cards had neither number nor letters. Their conversations could have included the meanings within the politics of the castle walls.
In Western Europe, during the Middle Ages and up to the 20th Century, many card games were printed based on the model of the first French deck. Spelling mistakes were many because the first typesetters were sometimes illiterate.
Today the Rider-Waite deck is the most popular and one I use to teach from. It has the advantage of having pictures on all the cards, which makes interpretation easier. Recently, lots and lots of other decks have been published and have used the Rider-Waite as their basis, but using their own experiences and knowledge to convey the message.
